Quoits Competitions

Playing the traditional game of quoits and having fun

We hold an annual competition at Killhope on Father’s Day

Quoits

This event, organised by Peter Nattrass, attracts players from around the region. Quoits is a traditional game that dates back centuries, and it was played by the lead miners in the North Pennines. It involves throwing cast iron rings onto a metal spike, called a hob, over a distance of 11 yards.

The Value

The annual quoits competition helps to preserve a traditional game that the miners enjoyed, and it’s also a relaxed social event. Visitors to the site are welcome to take part or watch.
