Reopening the mine at Killhope

The mine entrance had been sealed up with stonework when the mine closed. The condition of the mine behind this barrier was unknown. The Friends of Killhope unblocked the adit and cleared the mine tunnel so that Park Level Mine could be opened to the public.

The Value

The mine was officially opened in 1996 by Tony Blair, then Leader of the Opposition. Since then, tens of thousands of visitors to Killhope have enjoyed an underground tour of the mine and experienced a little of the life and work of lead miners in the 19th century.
